The average Burundian walks three miles for clean water. To simulate the daily journey of many Burundians, three Carry The Water teams of six people are invited to walk the 5K race route carrying water jugs weighing 30 to 50 pounds, similar to the ones used by families in Burundi.
Gazelle Foundation founder Gilbert Tuhabonye tells the story often: as a boy growing up in Burundi, he walked 3 miles at least once every day to a river to fill a plastic jug with drinking water for his family. So did his neighbors, classmates, and friends.
When we build a Gazelle Foundation water system in Burundi, we reduce the distance to safe drinking water from 3 miles to just over 400 meters. Carry The Water teams are a visual reminder of the purpose of Run For The Water, and of the impact clean water has on the people who need it most.
